Rangers have no desire to encounter bears on the trail. In wilderness areas where bears have little or no contact with humans, it is usually enough for rangers make noise to keep the bears at bay and let bears know that they are in the area. Bears do not typically seek human contact. During summer months, bears are far more interested in salmon and berries. However, to be safe, the rangers carry a gun to protect the team, even when they are only hunting lichen.
