Lichen populations are monitored in order to track air pollution in the Tongass National Forest. Composite organisms of fungus and green algae, lichen are especially vulnerable to air pollution. Relatively low levels of sulphur and nitrogen affects growth and appearance of lichen and can be an early indicator of an elevation in pollution levels. (Photo/Julie Denesha)
